Job Shadow NarrativeAlexa Lockwood
English 12 Mr. Gonzales December 9 2015 My Ride Along Experience On December 9th 2015 at 5:00 PM, I went to the Lindsay Police Department to do a ride along with sergeant Nicholas Nave. I did the ride along to do my job shadow for the senior project. I chose to do a ride along because the field that I want to go into is Law Enforcement. The career that I want to get into in law enforcement is to be a criminal investigator. As I arrived at the location, at 4:45 PM, I sat down in the main office to wait for the officer to assist me to the ride along. As I was sitting down, there was a lady who walked into the police station, sobbing in tears, because of an incident that took place with her wallet. Then finally, the sergeant called me into the back room and he asked me, “Do you do drugs”? and I replied with saying, “No sir, I never took drugs in my whole life”, than he lastly replied by saying, “good, because you don’t want to end up like that lady”. I was a bit relaxed and less tense to know that the officer assisting me was very joyful and sweet. After our opening introduction, the sergeant took me into his office with the rest of the officers and from 5 til about 5:45 they talked and laughed as the officers that are finished with their day shift left, and the officers on the night shift came in. When the officers in the day shift left to go home, sergeant Nicholas Nave showed me around the police station. After that, officer Eddy, cleared his passenger seat for me. As I went into the car the officer Eddy already got a call about a lady who collapsed onto the floor. We went to the lady’s house and I stood there at the scene evaluating the paramedics as they took blood from the lady. After the paramedics took her to the hospital, the officer and I drove around Lindsay from 6:30 til 8:30 at night and the officer had asked me questions about my life and what I want to do after high school. We than pulled into an orange grove and I had asked the officer, “what is it that you're going to show me officer”, and he showed me a lady who lives inside her car, and she made herself a hut inside the orange groves. I sat down in shock and I told him, “ I am in shock, because of the weather I can’t understand how someone could live like that”. He replied by saying, “yes, that is why it is good to stay in school”! After that event took place, he told me that sergeant Nage will let me ride with him for a while so I can get a different perspective on how the two police officers are at their jobs. As I sat down in the car with the sergeant, he had cleared his passenger seat for me. As I went into the car sergeant Nicholas already got a call about a fugitive escaping. As we were on the other side of Lindsay, the sergeant and I made a fast u turn back to the stores, and their we stopped this criminal. As we stopped him, we had a felony warrant for his arrest, so we took him into the Porterville Police Department and their he was put into a cell for the night until being transferred over to the Visalia Police Department. On our way back into Lindsay at 10:00 at night, the sergeant got another call for a burglary. We drove fast to the house that got burglarized, and there we found a stolen flat screen television. Their the sergeant fingerprinted the sliding glass door outside, by taking a small sweeper into powder and sweeped the powder on the glass door to be able to see finger prints. When the sergeant found the fingerprints, he than put tape on the sliding glass door to keep the fingerprints safe in order for the laboratory to investigate them. By the end of the crime scene, we went back to the police station at 11:00 at night so that I could interview sergeant Nave and he can evaluate me. The interview had ended at 11:20 at night and there the sergeant dropped me off at my location and the job shadow had ended. This experience that I had with the ride along was a night that I will remember and never forget. As a criminal investigator when a crime scene approaches, you have to be ready to investigate and figure out where, how, what, when and where the crime scene took place. The thing that I loved and learned the most while experiencing the ride along, was getting a hands on experience on how the fingerprinting process works while you are investigating a crime. The thing that I disliked the most was driving around the town of Lindsay for three hours looking for crimes because, it got pretty tiring after a while. In conclusion, I am still very interested in going into law enforcement when I am older to be a criminal investigator because, the ride along has really opened my eyes more into the works of criminal investigation! |
